Plastiki expedition

First an island of recycled bottles and now a sailing vessel that just completed the voyage from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia! Here's a link: http://www.montrealgazette.com/technology/Plastiki+bottle+ship+completes+pioneering+trip+across+Pacific/3326254/story.html Maybe through the school we could start a similar project as the island in Shane's video in Manzanilla to raise awareness of just how many of those plastic bottles are accumulating. I personally think the companies could step up and recycle these bottles. Put a deposit on them like the beer bottles. Where I live we have a recycling depot where glass, plastic, paper, metal, etc. are all collected. There is also a bottle depot where all kinds of bottles (wine, juice, pop, beer, etc) are refunded. The government pays for the bottle depot person, but otherwise everyone is volunteer. There is also a Free Store in a community building (no rental fees) and everything there is free for the taking. It took a couple of people with a vision to make it happen and it's working. We live on an island with no dump and garbage pick-up which is transported off the island costs $3 per bag, so we are all encouraged to deal with our own trash. This is a good model and I would love to help on this. |
