There is a route to the west starting near Tres Marias between Cuernavaca and DF. There's a Tres Marias exit off the highway. I've not done it but know a few that have. 2 lane typical Mexican country road.

I've done Cuernavaca -> Acapulco and up the coast to Melaque in 2 days. Stayed over in Playa Azul
