Wastewater treatment

I have carefully read the posts related to the treatment of wastewater in La Manzanilla. Since I lived in Mexico some years ago and being responsible for innovation, research and development at Premier Tech, a Canadian company developing on-site wastewater treatment systems for single dwelling and small communities, I am very aware of the problems prevailing in La Manzanilla. Each of my visits to the Manzanilla showed me the importance of this issue in a village adjacent to a unique mangrove.

Premier Tech Aqua has developed a simple and effective treatment without electricity using peat or coconut husk chips as filter media (http://www.premiertechaqua.com/international/en/)

Currently, 50 000 systems were installed in Canada, the United States in France, Martinique and elsewhere in the world (http://www.premiertechaqua.com/international/en/products/pt_compact_coco_filter.asp)

In addition to providing stable performance, the system adds value to a residue which is currently burned and create jobs in the regions producing cocos. (http://www.premiertechenv.com/international/en/doc/75_NOWRApaperRLacasse_EN.pdf )

This system has been presented over the last years to various authorities (state and country levels) but it appears that this type of problem is not yet a priority. A day will come. In fact, the United States and Canada were not so many ahead of the problem of small communities. French law just changed last summer.

Each visit to Mexico allows me to understand better the situation and see how such a simple and effective system developed for small communities could be adapted to the Mexican context. During my last visit few weeks ago, I found a Mexican company that would be capable of producing chips coconut required for the system. This is an important step to reduce costs.

I will be in La Manzanilla during the Christmas holidays to enjoy the beach and village. If some of you might be interested in knowing more, I will gladly exchange to see if such a system could be one day adapted to the La Manzanilla context. Let me know.
