beach break-in last night

Friends,who are renting down the beach not far from our house,stopped by to tell us that they had been broken into last night and their cash was stolen. They think it happened sometime between 7:30 and 9:30 while they were out to dinner. The credit cards were found in the sand outside their rental unit this morning. They had locked their beach side screen doors, but apparently not their beach side glass doors. This is the third such robbery on the beach that we have heard of in the past few weeks. A common thread seems to be renters or house guests not securing their doors on the beach side. Owners need to emphasize the necessity to always lock up when they are away from their unit and to not leave cash and valuables(esp cameras and computers)in a visible place. An inexpensive motion detector can be purchased from Radio Shack in the Comercial shopping center in Manzanillo. The unit is battery operated and makes a very loud shrill noise when detecting movement...enough to scare off intruders.
