sewer report

It pleases me to report that the La Manzanilla sewer system is functioning now, however incompletely. The lift station has been electrified (see photos), and is pumping black waters to a large septic tank in Los Ingenios about 50 meters west of the Tamarindo wellhead (see photos). This tank then flows effluent to a leach field. The adoquin (cobbling) project is progressing though town beyond the jardin (see photos) and laterals are being connected to homes and businesses as they go (see photos). Laterals are also being stubbed out to empty lots (see photos). Most homes and businesses along Maria Asuncion have now been connected to the system, and many fosas have been removed from beneath the public streets. Sra. Sanchez and #2b Calle Tamarindos (next to Kenny's Burgers) are no longer spraying black waters in the street, and Roberto Verde's Black Hole (see photos) will soon be a thing of the past. Rain water intrusion during the rainy season will continue to be a problem until the system is perfected. During the rainy season the lift station is by-passed and the blackwaters are sent to the mangrove which causes the flooding from the manhole near Yola's corner. I had some very productive conversations with Morgan, who maintains the potable water system in town, and Jose, who maintains the sewer lift station and septic tank. They were surprised and pleased to learn that the visitor community is interested in local water and sanitation issues. And they were both happy and proud to share all they know. I gave them a lot of credit for what has been achieved thus far. We also talked about anticipated problems such as stoppages in individual sewer laterals due to improper fittings used (see photos, tees on their backs) and increased problems with sewer gas (hydrogen sulfide) entering homes and businesses due to lack of proper p-traps (water weirs).
