Ross- Your instincts are good. Traps are installed at each drainage fixture- sink, shower, floor drain, etc., and the toilet has it built in as the s-bend out of the bowl. A trap is not necessary on the lateral, although in San Francisco they do require a "curb trap". Backflow into your lateral is a worthy concern for the houses in the flats of town. Anti- backwater devices such as swing check valves, sewer poppers and Contra Costa valves are simple preventive or relief devices that will protect your lateral from backflow. I have not investigated their availability in Mexico. Mark
