Ants!

Help! We have a colony of ants that periodically swarm our deck. We can't find the nest, seems to be someplace in the uncleared lot behind us. It wouldn't be such a huge deal, we live in the country up north and have insects around all the time, but I got bitten a couple of weeks ago and had a really nasty systemic allergic reaction. Used hydrocort and sent my husband to the pharmacia for an atihistamine right away, but still itched, threw up and shivered all night. So now I'm scared to death of them. Clordano slows them down, but they come back, and I hate using poison around our cats (and us, and in the environment).
Anyone have any suggestions?
