The first photo of the town triangle brought back a flood of memories. The planters and the plants were donated to the town by Bert Humber and Bob Kimsey. The fountain, which did not survive because of cars backing into it, was donated by Ann and Frank Boslet.

Look at the streets...no people and few cars. No 4-wheelers, no motor bikes, not even a bicycle.

When we first arrived in La Manzanilla 14 years ago, there were more horses and burros on the streets than cars. There were no 4-wheelers or motor bikes. People mostly walked. A few had bicycles. It was a quieter and gentler time.

Every gringo knew every other gringo in town and it was normal, when going into a restaurant, that you knew every single customer there. Very few people utilized a full name. There was Alaska Joe, Canadian Dave, Detroit Dave, Apache Richard, Scary Jerry, and so forth. Some who utilized only first names include Daniel, Scotty, Barry, Maria, and Liz.

Even back then people were talking about paved streets, another sewer system (I think we are on our 3rd), and receiving titled property. No one, in their wildest dreams, would have visualized a young Mexican girl riding down the street on a moped with a cell phone to her ear.

Although La Manzanilla has changed and continues to do so, we also love it for what it is today. Who could have stood on the jardin a few nights ago with the fantastic Odesa band playing in celebration of the town's young soccer team winning its championship and not felt a part of rural Mexico.
