That doesn´t surprise me. They often come into our mangrove later in the season when the water is lower, but since the part of the lagoon closest to the ocean was isolated after they filled the road in, then what you have is an artifically-created similar situation where the water is lower in that part and thus the food supply is more concentrated and easier to get at. The spoonbills go for the small pink crustaceans in the littoral zone just underneath the muck--thus their pink color.
