Actually true or not, the story is that someone at BBDO (still Batton Barton Durstine and Osborn at the time)came up with the idea to "give them the razor and sell them the blade." It was a very successful strategy, and one that has transferred seamlessly to ink-jet printers. I agree with all of your comments re: the wisdom (or lack thereof) of this approach.
