I remember those airborne lights and set off a few myself. But as cool as they seemed at the time, I must admit 40 years later has given me a different perspective. I belong to a volunteer fire dept. back home. A fire bag accidently landing on the super dry grasses and bush in this area would spread so quickly that it would almost immediately get out of hand. The heat of the fire also generates it's own wind that travels from the cooler ocean air towards the fire, exacerbating the problem. Add to that, the whole fire fighting operation gets seriously awkward and dangerous at night re: decent lighting, water resupply, communications... On a completely different direction, giant plastic bags if they land in the ocean are a well documented and notorious hazard for marine life and outboard motors. This is a very beautiful part of paradise here. My opinion is we should do our best to respect and preserve it. Do we want to see piles of plastic bags washing up on the beach or bits of shredded bags dangling from the trees and power lines? Again, the idea is neat and I've done it myself. Don't want to be a party poop so lets just drink enough tequila on new years "til we lights!
