I have just returned from Mazatlan and I can report that the tourist business is in shambles. The major resorts less than 50% full. Restaurants for the most part deserted. The military and police presence is clearly stepped up but the damage to the tourist trade has been done by the negative media. I don't believe the place was any more dangerous than any other place and would quickly recommend it to anyone.

The really dangerous part of Mazatlan is attempting to walk anywhere, the already lousy sidewalk set up has been made worse by the installation of underground electrics with the corresponding transformers plunked right in the middle of the already crappy sidewalks. The obstacle course pushes pedestrians out in the street just trying to get around the Zona Dorado.
