LatinNews Daily - 14 February 2011
Massacres surge around Mexico City
Development: Early on 13 February a gang killed eight people in San Agustín Atlapulco, which is part of the sprawling conurbation of Nezahualcóyotl, in the Estado de México.
Significance: The massacre means that there have now been six massacres (in which a total of 36 people have been killed) in the past six months in Mexico’s central valley, previously a relatively peaceful part of the country. The government is responding by deploying the army and marines both in the Estado and in Mexico City (DF).
Key points:
• The federal government’s argument that the overwhelming bulk, at least 65%, of all gang killings takes place in a handful of states is valid. The government’s problem is that the violence is spreading well beyond these battlegrounds into places which have been more peaceful. Around 20% of Mexico’s population lives in the Estado or Distrito Federal (Mexico City).
• Five states (Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Nuevo León, Guerrero and Durango) accounted for 65% of the 1,337 people killed by gangsters in Mexico between 1 January and 11 February 2011.
• The Estado de México’s Agencia de Seguridad Estatal (ASE) reports that all the massacres appear to be related to squabbles over drug pushing.
