Using our Homes to Help the Japanese Who Don't Have Any

The proprietor of the Japanese Restaurant in Melaque and I are organizing a list of possible rentals for use by his friends who have lost homes in the north. The response from www.tomzap.com has been heartening with one person offering a free bungalow and numerous others offering summertime rates for homes that might otherwise be unoccupied.

There is so much that is not known -- and so, neither the owner nor myself -- have any idea of whether any Japanese will come. (These will most likely be the people who can foot the bill for the $2000 airfare and who may not have relatives with whom they can live with in the south. The north that was hardest hit is apparently also the site of numerous retirement homes. Since most elderly do live with family, it is assumed that most of these folks are without relatives.)

Most likely there will be sufficient housing in Melaque -- near is better for those who live here and speak Japanese since they are working -- but if you speak Japanese or do have a home that you would be willing to open up, please send me an e-mail and indicate the available dates, what rate you would charge, the conditions you might have, etc.

Currently, the Japanese government is encouraging everyone in the north to go somewhere else for one year.

One other thing, for those of us that patronize the Japanese Restaurant: it meant a tremendous amount that the foreign and Mexican communities have offered emotional and tangible support.

As things progress, I will post here and on tomzap
