LatinNews Daily - 16 March 2011
Another car bomb in Tamaulipas
Development: On 15 March a car bomb went off in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas.
Significance: The car exploded in a parking lot used by a nursery, opposite the state public security office in Ciudad Victoria and slightly wounded two people. There was a spate of car bombs in January this year and December 2010 in at least two other states, Hidalgo and Nuevo León.
Key points:
• Tamaulipas has become one of the most violent states in Mexico. According to the Federación de Cámaras Nacionales de Comercio (Fecanaco) in Tampico, one of Tamaulipas’s biggest cities, 40% of 3,000 shops have closed in the past two years. Fenaco said that the deteriorating security situation was the usual reason. Fenaco said that employers were being driven away from the state and this was depressing domestic demand.
• Fenaco said that 4,000 people joined the ranks of the unemployed in Tampico in 2010, in a year when the national economy grew by 6.5%.
• The big worry for business in the state is what will happen during Holy Week (17 to 22 April) a key public holiday. In 2010 Holy Week was disastrous for business because of a series of attacks by narco gangsters. This led to the cancelled of the traditional “Fiestas de Abril Tampico 2010" for the first time in 50 years.
