Mexico discovers another body dump
Development: On 6 April, the Mexican authorities discovered seven mass graves containing a total of 59 bodies in Tamaulipas.
Significance: At least some of the bodies appear to be of people who were kidnapped when a bus was held up on 25 March. The bodies were found in the municipality of San Fernando, close to where the bodies of 72 (mostly Central American) migrants were found in August 2010.
• The gruesome discovery occurred on the same day that 20 cities across Mexico held silent marches to protest against violent crime. The marches were organised by civil society groups inspired by the murder of six youngsters in Temixco, Morelos, on 28 March. One of those killed was Juan Francisco Sicilia, the son of a prominent Roman Catholic poet, Javier Sicilia. Sicilia was received by President Felipe Calderón after the Mexico City march yesterday.
• Calderón had not scheduled the meeting with Sicilia, and, according to Sicilia, offered his condolences “but nothing beyond what was already known.
