If the tinaco passes light it may grow "lama", a green algae. We had to paint our white tinaco to stop this problem. We do get a bad smell from our hot water tank and need to flush it ot well upon return. You could drain it when not in use. Otherwise, keeping a tinaco full is good in my opinion.
