Subject: Mexico News DAILY May 10, 2011 LatinNews Daily - 10 May 2011 Calderón meets Sicilia again Development: On 9 May Mexico’s President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa hosted bereaved poet, Javier Sicilia, for a second meeting at Los Pinos, the presidential residence. Significance: Sicilia organised a march for peace which drew a 100,000 people to central Mexico City on 8 May. Sicilia called for a change in government security policy and the sacking of the controversial public security minister, Genaro García Luna. Sicilia has become a vocal advocate for change since his son, Juan Francisco, was killed by drug gangs in March. Key points: • President Calderón realises that Sicilia represents a growing body of opinion in Mexico, but he does not want to change policy. Calderón’s solution is to risk being insulted by Sicilia and his supporters as he tries to defend his policy stance. • Sicilia’s moral authority as a mourning parent is bolstered by his devout Roman Catholicism. Besides calling for García Luna to be sacked (which the government has made it clear will not happen), Sicilia has called for voters to consider boycotting elections. |
