If you sell a car you brought in from NoB in Mexico and the new "owner" has an accident with the car or runs somebody over, you are liable as long as the sticker hasn't been cancelled at the border. Most people IMHO wouldn't want that possibility hanging over them.
Also, Willy is right about the sticker never expiring as long as you keep your FM3 (No Inmigrado these days) or FM2 (Inmigrado) in effect.
If you total a car in Mexico, you can have the piece of windshield with the sticker on it cut out to return to the border. You will want a copy of the police report re: the accident as well. A picture of the wreck with license plate in view is helpful too.
