LatinNews Daily - 31 May 2011
Terrorism in Coahuila
Development: Late on 29 May a grenade was thrown at the offices of the main newspaper in Saltillo, Coahuila.
Significance: Gang violence is increasing in states facing elections this year. Coahuila is holding gubernatorial elections on 3 July, along with Nayarit and the Estado de México. In 2012 the whole country will elect a new president and a new congress.
Key points:
• Coahuila, a fief of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional, has seen a nasty upswing in gang violence in recent years. So far this year (to 27 May), 172 people have been killed by gangsters in the state. In the whole of 2010, 199 people were killed by gangsters. In 2006, before President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa launched his war on crime, 17 people were killed by gangsters in the state.
• Last week a surge in violence in Michoacán, which holds elections in November 2011, prompted the three main parties to suggest that they should all back a consensus candidate. In Nayarit a shoot-out between two gangs left 29 people dead on 25 May.
• No-one was killed by the grenade in Saltillo, but the exterior of Vanguardia was damaged. At the time of the attack, 50 people were working in the building.
