Calderón meets Sicilia again
Development: On 23 June Presidet Felipe Calderón Hinojosa of Mexico met Javier Sicilia, a peace activist.
Significance: Calderón and his government have been put on the back foot by Sicilia, a poet and Roman Catholic activist whose son was murdered by gangsters in Morelos in March. This was Calderón’s third meeting with Sicilia who holds no political post. Sicilia is pushing hard for a change in the government’s security strategy in which the federal police and the army battle gangsters.
Key points:
• At the meeting yesterday (23 June), Calderón said that he would apologise for the lives lost in the wear against the gangs because the government had been unable to protect its citizens; however, he would not apologise for launching the war.
• Calderón and Sicilia agreed to meet again, though no date was set.
• The prominence of Sicilia is similar to that of Juan Carlos Blumberg, an Argentine who met the late President Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) several times after the kidnapping and murder of his son, Axel, in 2004.
