Gangs kill seven people in Estado
Development: On 26 June police found seven bodies in two municipalities in the Estado de Mexico.
Significance: The Estado goes to the polls on 3 July to elect a new governor. The current governor, Enrique Peña Nieto, is the poll front-runner for the presidential elections in 2012. One of his key campaign platforms is that violence in the Estado is falling and is well below the levels reached in northern Mexico.
Key points:
• To date this year (1 January-24 June) 222 people have been killed in gang related violence in the Estado, according to daily Reforma’s ‘Ejecutómetro’. In 2010, there were 464 victims of gang violence in the state, up from 254 in 2009.
• On 24 June President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa sent another 2,800 troops to Tamaulipas, in the north of the country, where drug gangs have killed 543 people this so far this year, up from 725 in 2010 and 49 in 2009. The troops will be deployed across the state’s 22 municipalities and are intended to provide cover while the municipal police forces are purged of their corrupt elements.
