Calderón's sister triumphs in Michaocán
Development: On 31 July the sister of President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa of Mexico won the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) nomination to stand for the governorship of Michoacán in November.
Significance: Michoacán, although controlled by the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), is one of the few states in Mexico in which all three major parties (PRD, PAN and the Partido Revolucionario Institucional [PRI]) have a chance. President Calderón, who like his sister was born in Michoacán, first deployed troops against gangsters in that state and in 2010 undermined the state government by arresting 10 mayors and numerous state officials for their alleged links to drug gangs. All of those arrested have been released because of a lack of evidence.
Key points:
• Luisa Marcia “Cocoa” Calderón Hinojosa easily defeated Marko Cortés in the closed PAN primary election.
• The PRI picked Fausto Vallejo Figueroa, the three times mayor of the state capital, Morelia, at its convention (also on 31 July).
• The PRD has already picked a former senator, Silvano Aureoles Conejo, as its candidate.
• President Calderón himself stood as the PAN candidate for governor of Michoacán in 1995, but he was defeated.
