US Republicans stress Mexican border issue
Development: On 11 August eight Republican presidential pre-candidates held a nationally televised debate on the eve of the Iowa Ames Straw Poll on 13 August.
Significance: Although the candidates attacked each other’s policy positions and characteristics for most of the debate, the one issue they all appeared to agree on was that that the US’s border with Mexico needed strengthening. The straw poll is important because only twice in the past 20 years has the winner of the Republican straw poll failed to win the more important Caucus, which this is scheduled for 6 February 2012.
Key points:
• The Republican candidates all agreed that the US-Mexican border needed to be secured before any move could be made on immigration reform. Newt Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, also suggested moving the Department of Homeland Security out of Washington and down to Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.
• The debate did not include the governor of Texas, Rick Perry, who has yet to announce his candidacy for the 2012 Republican nomination.
