Gangsters start shooting at Mexico football match
Development: On 21 August rifle shots were fired at a stadium in Torreón, Coahuila, during a football match.
Significance: The incident took place at peak time, during a televised match between Club Santos Laguna and Morelia and has become the first televised gang shoot-out. The identity of the two teams may be of importance: Torreón, home of Club Santos Laguna, is the home state of Humberto Moreira, the president of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) and a former governor of the state of Coahuila (which is now run by his brother, Rubén); Morelia is the capital of Michoacán, the home state of President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa. Calderón’s sister, Luisa María ‘Cocoa’ Calderón is the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) candidate in Michoacán’s 13 November gubernatorial election.
Key points:
• Exactly what happened is not clear. The TV pictures showed players, officials and some of the crowd suddenly rushing for cover. Club Santos and the authorities in Torreón say that there were no shots fired inside the stadium, but gangsters did shoot at a police patrol outside the stadium.
• The club also says that at least five shots were fired at installations in the stadium, notably the ‘TV Azteca’ studio.
• In May the federal government sent 1,600 troops and 300 federal police agents to Coahuila to deal with the upsurge in gang warfare. So far this year (to 19 August), 417 people have been killed in the state, well up on the 365 gang killings in the whole of 2010.
