I agree, I have stayed at this motel/hotel since it first opened about 8 years ago, it is gated and very secure and has a buffet restaurant attached. If you go further, try the hotel at the bay in Guaymas as it is a really nice old colonial hotel: Hotel Playa De Cortes

I used to sometimes stay in Culiacan near the autopista but no more as there was a big gunfight near where I stayed, Culiacan is the drug capital of Sinaloa and that really makes it the drug capital of all Mexico. There are usually about 2-3 executions a day there! The Sinaloa Cartel has the news media scared to death so not much leaks out about the many killings. You might also consider stopping in Navajoa before venturing into Sinaloa. Best to avoid stopping in this state altogether even Mazatlan isn't very safe, a Canadian was shot in a drive-by as he was crossing the street in the gold-coast hotel zone...not good.
