Summer Program for La Manzanilla Kids Offers
Fun and Learning

Our annual summer program was again a huge success for the 6-12 year olds of La Manzanilla. For three weeks they dipped their brushes in colorful paint, sang songs in English, learned how to care for their precious environment, played cooperative games and much more! The program was three hours a day, offering classes in physical education, art and English.

The program once again filled up on the first day with 29 eager kids. The staff consisted of our two teacher interns Kelly and Stephanie, our Program Director Nancy, local art teacher Isaura and our Wings scholarship recipients who were doing community service hours.

To see more photos of the kids at the summer program please visit our facebook page.

Sara Henze "Wings" Art Grant Fund

In memory of the well-loved La Manzanilla resident Sara Henze (1968-2010) an art grant fund has been established for La Manzanilla youth (ages 12–18) pursuing personal development in the performing or fine arts.

Sara’s life was a work and expression of art. As a child Sara was drawn most to her father, the artist Wolfgang Henze, with whom she discovered her love for painting and writing. He also was the family member who most frequently visited her in Mexico.

Sara always encouraged people to follow their dreams. The Sara Henze “Wings” art scholarship fund will continue keeping her wish alive and helping the young generation pursue their artistic development.

How Does It Work?

The Sara Henze “Wings” art fund is an open fund where people who knew and loved Sara, or people who share a love of the arts, can donate to support the artistic development of La Manzanilla youth. Donations of any amount can be made to this fund through Teachers Without Borders (for a tax deduction within the U.S.), through PayPal, or through making a cash donation. Please see our Donations page. For more info on the grant fund and to read about guidelines on how youth apply for funds, please click here.

A special thanks to Sandy Hill & Don Binkley for setting up this fund and to Sara’s daughters Mayan and Miriam Henze for their support, enthusiasm and assistance.

Annual School Supply Drive Underway!

LCEF has again teamed up with June Nery of VisitLaManzanilla.com to support the annual school supply drive. If you are coming for a visit please consider packing a few school supplies or, even better, when you are here buy the supplies locally. Notebooks, pencils, erasers, scissors, glue, paints are all needed. Please click here for a full list of items needed. Donations can be dropped off at June's home. Please email her at june@visitlamanzanilla.com for directions.

A Special Thanks…

Thank you to Marcia Grothe and Kay M. & Tolling Jennings for support with the building of the second classroom at the Costa Alegre Educational Center....our past volunteers, Stephanie Hernandes & Kelly Thomas who helped with the summer camp…our new volunteers, Traver Riggins, who came from Washington D.C. to assist with our fall classes and Karin Carter who jumped in to help us with the middle school English classes. Finally, thank you to our faithful newsletter readers and those who continually support the cause of helping the locals of La Manzanilla have better educational opportunities for a more prosperous future.

Brick By Brick Campaign Reminder
In a recent survey administered by our Program Director Nancy and volunteer teacher Traver, community residents were asked about their interest in having a computer lab at the Costa Alegre Educational Center where they can learn computer skills. A whopping 94%, including young and old, said they would gladly attend the classes!
The dream is there and now the road is being paved to get there. With our brick by brick fundraising campaign, you can be a part of building the walls for the computer lab. Email us today at la_catalinafoundation@hotmail.com for info on how you can sponsor bricks for the new computer lab!

La Catalina Educational Foundation, the schools and the children of La Manzanilla say, “Gracias!”
