Driving into Mexico

We crossed the border in Nogales on last Tuesday and were informed that as of July 2011 all foreigners driving into the country now have to pay a $300 USD deposit per vehicle. This is in addition to your permit fee of about 440 pesos. The permit must be renewed in 110 days at the appropriate "hacienda" on the EXACT day that they tell you. If you fail to renew on that day you will loose the deposit. After my first due date for renewal my next renewal can be accomplished when I renew my FM3. So if you are driving down be aware of this new cost and requirement. We used a credit card and were told the card would be credited back once we left the country in June. Vamos a ver.
Hope this helps those who are unaware.
