Hi David, exactly same thing happened with our 98 mazda van last year, en-route to Guadalajara.
Turned out some metal hoses on the front driver side had corroded. Had that repaired in manzanillo then continued on our way. Overheated again as we had now fried the thermostat and a sensor. Good luck with the repairs and carry lots of water!
