The angst expressed in these posts is emblematic of the "Tragedy of the Commons."

The larger question becomes how to protect the commons for all, with some sort of equitable sharing of expense.

Viz: We all enjoyed those trees and want(ed) them to remain a part of our "commons." How can we, with clear conscience, demand/request the owner of the trees bear 100% of the burden to protect the commons we all enjoy? Yes, we could have encouraged him to select a lot without trees for his project. But the other side of that coin is that we have then devalued the lot, ie taken value that does not belong to us.

I think about this a lot. It happens all over, and there are no easy answers.
