I do not live in Melaque, but rather on a sailboat in Mexico. I have spent a number of months in Barra de Navidad which is walking distance from Melaque. Usually the talk about crime is about petty theft which is fairly common in Mexico as a whole. Over the years I have spent months at a time in Mexico by RV living on free beaches, and in small non tourist towns. I have found the people to be great and very helpful. They will usually give you their last peso.
After retiring and moving onto a sailboat full time, the obvious destination was Mexico. We still have absolutely no regrets, and consider ourselves as safe if not safer than we felt in Canada. We are actually in Canada right now visiting family for the holidays. It was actually a bit of a shock to see the amount of crime depicted on the evening news here. In a few days we head back to the safety of Mexico.
