Cisco , who is now 12, has been on a home cooked diet since a Vet in California recommended it in August. It's really very simple . As Norma said, it's chicken, carrots, potatoes, black beans, apples, cucumbers, spinach, anything you can get in the pot.
The chicken at the Bodega in Cihuatlan is very cheap. A whole chicken is about $65 ps. gizzards and wings even less. I boil the chicken first, take it out and then put the veggies in to boil. De-bone the chicken and then put it back in with the cooked veggies, put it in containers and freeze it. I usually make about 10 days at a time.
It's not that easy if you are traveling, but it's worth it for your fury friend if you can at least do it most of the time.
As far as shaving, I have been told by Susan Monger DVM, International Director of the Humane Society, that shaving is NOT a good idea. I asked her because so many people ask me if I ever considered shaving Cisco with all his long hair. The hair insulates the body from the heat.
There will be many that would argue that opinion. I'm just passing it along.
