Sliced Iguanas is an incredible read. Isabelle Tree is a gifted writer who carries you along and provides unusual insights. Some of the chapters highlight, in depth and with cultural understanding, the festivals an area is known for: Semana Santa in San Miguel, Dia de los Muertos in Patzcuaro, for example. Other chapters are of ususual cultural practices such as in Juchitan which is a matrilineal society where "machismo" is virtually unknown and where homosexual and transvestite men are not just tolerated but treated with affection. The chapter on Chiapas and the Zapatistas was enlightening too. I ended my journey through this book realizing that I need to expand my point of view with regard to Mexico's diversity. If the book isn't in La Manzanilla, ask someone to bring it down when they come. It is worth the effort. |
