Driving down the coast from La Manz?

We're getting ready to go away on our annual driving trip around Mexico. This year we wanted to drive south down the coast to Zihuatenejo and Acapulco.

However, our Mexican friends have been doing their best to convince us that it's not safe to drive the road down the coast - especially considering it's in Michoacan.

Anybody driven this way? Any recommendations - places to stay along the way? Gracias!
