I drove down to a beach just north of Zihuatanejo last August. I've also gone down that way in previous years and as everyone else said - it's phenomenally beautiful!! It is very slow going (I figure it's about 10 hrs from here to Zihua) but well worth it! We had one military check point which was fine, but also beware of construction (I imagine it's still happening) North of Caleta de Campos.

My ideas on places (mostly from North to South but I might have messsed up somewhere) Ticla is good for surfing but I've heard a lot of sketchy stories of people staying there (they were camping). Maruata (can never remember how to spell that) is beautiful but I think it's a bit sketchy - a nice place for a quick swim and then move on. Rio Nexpa is a great surf spot but has been well known for years to be a hot spot for thieves - probably best to stay in Caleta. Playa Azul is a bit more touristy but has a really nice beach. Playa La Saladita is a gorgeous and relaxing beach just north of Troncones. Zihuatanejo is nice and Acapulco sucks. In my opinion anyways :-) As long as you know where you're going to be staying I think it's well worth the drive.
