Erin, I too have found the same skilled labor problems when building our house. To help solve the problem of using local labor, I insisted on using local labor for any of the non-skilled specialty labor that I needed. It helped out in 3 ways. I was using local labor as well as the non specialty labor was cheaper because they lived here. The local labor was also able to source local materials. The local labor is also being trained by the skilled non local labor. I think that if everyone tries to use any of the local labor that is willing and the optimum word is able We will be helping the locals in more than just temporary jobs they will be learning a valued skill. The old saying give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. Last but no least we all know that their is 2 prices for everything. Gringo price and local price. I would never negotiate material or labor prices direct I would always let my general do that and I would deal with him. |
