I too have seen them crossing the road. My wife and I watched with interest a big orange one climb up onto our house across the patio floor near us and over the other house wall.
I was gardening one time and as I reached to check an irrigation emitter, a big one sprung from the leaves, rearing back with front legs raised in a clear warning, agitated pose. Scared me for sure, but happy to let it live in the garden. That one could have easily bitten me but chose to do the display.
They can bite but do not deliver a venom that will caase problems like the well known poisonous spiders
