Re: question for oil painters

I use vegetable oil (the cheapest from the grocery) to clean my oil painting brushes every day when I am finished painting...it works surprisingly well. Then when I really want to clean them thoroughly, I soak them in dishwashing liquid, and rinse them out. If paint dries in the bristles, it can sometimes be removed by soaking them in rubbing alcohol (I think that might work for dried-in acrylic paint, too.) It's an interesting dilemma as to how to dispose of the used oil and the rinse water when you are finished with it, though...I usually just let it evaporate, and dispose of the solid - assuming that is more responsible than letting the water go down the drain. The thinner that is available in paint stores here seems very toxic, and doesn't do as good a job as dishwashing liquid.
