"It was such a great place and it has never left my mind". You are in love, we all are. "after the kids get out of school". How long before that happens? "I have done my preliminary research on foreigners purchasing land/property (and I know purchasing is the wrong word.)" Basic rule, don't invest more than you can afford to lose. You may want to focus on properties which are either already titled or very close to being titled. "With that being said I am looking for any and all advice I can get on how to plan for this move". I tried for 6 years to plan my move, it did not happen till I just left, period. "What are the utility costs for 5-8 bedroom house?" Water - Safe figure is $50 usd a year Electricity - no AC $30 usd a month, with AC God only knows. Gas - about $40 usd a month? Telephone (cellular?) - about $40 usd a month? Internet - included in the telephone number The above numbers are on the high side. "I see the listing prices for properties, is that what they are actually selling for?" Make an offer, one never knows the current situation of a particular seller. What are the annual taxes? - cheap, about $40 usd a year. Is there such a thing as homeowners insurance there? - I think so, need others to answer this one. if so is it needed? - Your call, same answer no matter where you live. Are there enough tourist/non locals visiting overnight to support a decent life renting rooms? - Yes. Accommodations, price, location, promotion, property manager all determine the level of success. How many foreigners are living in the town now and from what areas of the world (We are from Iowa smack dab in the middle of the USA.)? Depends on the time of year, now (busy season) guessing 250 most from Canada, off season around 15, from everywhere. Just do it, total leap of faith. |
