Hey Mark - Daniel's prices re: costs are a bit on the LOW side so here's our two cents AND we have an apartment and a studio which we rent as well as our own residence.

Water - we have a small garden $60 US A YEAR (how low is that, eh?); if you have a swimming pool as high as $150 is what I've heard.

Gas - about $100 a month with clients and $40 a month by yourselves. We provide them with hot water which many rentals do not.

Electricity - we were paying about $125 a month, until we hit a glitch. I won't get into that.

Telephone - $60 a month (if you don't make long distance calls to US or Canada) and includes your internet with a wifi modem.

Yes, there is homeowners insurance and there are different underwriters who have different levels of risk. Our underwriters want to make sure we are more than 500 meters from the ocean (which we are - a mere 2 blocks from the sea); a palapa does increase the cost of your insurance; contents are covered in a different way but can definitely be covered (as well as expensive artwork, but it has to be worth the hassle); and we are not on titled land but our insurance claim was paid immediately, no problems.

Our taxes just went up to $75 US and with the discount $70.

If you think I can help any more, just write (probably at the little envelope beside my name at the top of the mesage).

Oh - and one more thing - I made 2 major changes in my life - moving onto a 42' sailboat and sailing for 4 years and then in '05 we bought this place. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens, until you pull the plug and just DO IT!

Looking forward to seeing you and your family here in the very near future.

Sincerely,
