Mark, the easiest way to bring a car and your household possessions down is to get an FM3 non-resident visa. This entitles the holder to bring a car down and leave it here as long as you keep renewing the visa on an annual basis. Your foreign plates and registration remain valid. It also allows you to bring household goods down duty free (some restrictions do apply. In many cases you can start this process at home.

Taxation of anything you might do for renumeration is a subject best left to non-speculative opinions.

What is entailed in getting an FM3 is subject to individual experiences, but most agree that the process gets smoother by the year. It costs about $125 per year. Additional vehicles and trailers require a second person with an FM3.

To add to what Debra said, I'd advise careful scrutinization and personal experience with the area of town you might consider as your neighbourhood. Better to know before you buy your tolerance for noise, traffic, road conditions, and walking ease into town.
