it does make a difference. when one who is aware of the difference reads that some was 'robbed", they think that the person was accosted with a gun or knife or baseball bat and told that if they don't give you what the 'robber' wants, he will do great bodily harm.

A burglary happens when someone enters a place, either that is unlocked or they break something to enter (breaking and entering) and then steal something and no personal contact is involved..

There is a difference. I have been the burglarized on more than one occasion (several times in the US and only once in MX)and never been 'robbed'. I have talked to several people who have experienced both and to a person, given the choice, they prefer being robbed. Without being to didactic, the distinction lies in the fact that robberies can turn violent to the person and burglaries just involve the loss of property.
