I have received emails from my friends email addresses asking for money to be wired that they are in London or where ever and have been robbed and can't get home. I knew my friends weren't out of the country and sent them a copy of the email They reported it to their provider and had to change their email address. Hotmail is one of the worse ones. My one friend who is a nationally known quilt teacher and who travels around the country, had it happen 3 times in less than 2 weeks and had to keep changing her address. After once I would go to gmail or yahoo. I had money taken out of my bank account using my debit card for 2 different people for 2 airline tickets to different places, one way through Jet Blue. I caught it online immediately, call the airlines and said I didn't order any tickets. Found out it was done through hotmail, had names probably phoney. and then they cancel the account. Had to notify the fraud division for my bank and got my money back But the biggest pain was I had to get a new card and notify any of my people whom I have automatic payments set up of new numbers, etc Have no idea how they got my information. I now check my account daily and that was also how I caught it so fast but they flew the same day as the charges were made. That one was a year before 9/11 so it wouldn't be as easy today but with forged id they can still do it.
