I just saw the car on the street in La Manz this afternoon. It has Illinois plates. To be legal, the car can only be sold north of the border. The current owner(s) will always be the only one(s) registered by the Mexican government as owner(s) of this vehicle. You will not be able to get Jalisco plates for it nor will you be able to show that you own it in Mexico. You probably will not even be able to buy insurance for the car. The sellers, on the other hand, will be responsible for anything that happens to/with that car until they drive it back across the border and surrender the temporary importation window sticker. Thus, if you buy it and it is stolen and used in a crime, the current owners will be deemed responsible. So unless they are planning on leaving Mexico and never coming back they are taking on a huge legal risk. And one cannot simply remove the sticker and take it to the border. Are there any real horror stories out there involving people who sold/bought their US state-licensed car here? You bet. Sorry if I'm raining on anyone's parade.
