Hello Marilyn, Yes, reiki energy can be sent through long distance, a practice I use myself, especially in the case of the terminally ill or traumatized, with whom I have previously shared reiki. Permission from recipient and, as you indicated, synchronized timing is essential. Another, seemingly little known, aspect of reiki is that, having been attuned to the first level, one can apply this healing energy to oneself, to one's own healing, as well as to others.
