It seems to me that anything that makes a home a little more difficult to break in to would be helpful. Bars on the windows can be cut, sure, but it's more inconvenient. Motion sensor lights could be mounted inside, aimed out the window.
It sucks that you have to think about that kind of stuff, but having someone break into your house is even more disturbing.You can't make your house impregnable, but unless you're storing things of great value you can make it more trouble than it's worth.
