Having surfed since the early sixties, the best advice from this link was not to fight the current. When you can, swim parallel to the beach. Rip currents typically occur when the beach is next to a point or cape. What is, perhaps, more dangerour is when the beach is heavily sloped. Stay on level (more or less) beaches when you enter the water. Steep beaches have a natural undertow. Think Arroyo Seco. Just my thoughts. |
