The second leg to my personal example -- that could probably be broadened to LM as well -- is which way I believe the market is going.

If I believe the mountain/vacation market is going to go down, then my only sensible course is to sell at any loss, or commit to hold until the market returns.

If I believe the market is going to increase, then I need to assess whether that asset is appreciating faster that the costs I am incurring monthly.

The writing on the wall at my mountain place is clear, but it's hard to "lock in" a loss -- particularly if there are no buyers around.


I am surprised I have gotten so little response on a thread that I assume is on so many minds. Perhaps it's a little like where to best order Viagra -- everyone wants to know, but no one wants to talk about it ... ...
