After having suffering numerous bad experiences with LA airport and US customs, I have switched to Westjet as my air carrier to Mexico from B.C.

I have the Westjet credit card and collect the points. To me, they seem comparable to the card I had with Alaska, but you need to figure that on your own usage. Westjet has American Airlines as a partner, so some good international travel options are there.

Alaska offers the $99 companion fare. Westjet does too, but only the first year and only with the card they charge an annual fee for.

As to travel, here is my comparisons:

Westjet Vancouver to Manzanillo involves a stop in Calgary, so in fact takes slightly longer to get there. The Manzanillo service is fairly expensive from Vancouver to Manzanillo ($509), but cheaper coming back ($329). With taxes = $902.

Alaska costs $753 US (cheapest deal).

However, I am flying Westjet from Vancouver to Puerta Valarta. Cheaper than Alaska and gets in to PV before noon, so lots of time to get a bus down to La Manz the same day.

Why Westjet has no cheap fares going down is a mystery, but if enough people use the service, they may.

If you don't want to spend any more than you have to, fly Alaska down to Mexico and Westjet back. The cost will be about the same and you can then compare airlines.
