Although I consider LA my adopted "home town," I too have tried to avoid the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area when driving with a friend from Seattle to La Manzanilla.

One option to avoid the tedious I-5 route through California's Central Valley is to take Hwy 99 south out of Sacramento, catch Hwy 58 from Bakersfield to Barstow, pick up I-40 at Barstow to Hwy 95, just east of Franconia AZ. Take that south to I-10 at Quartzite AZ and head east toward Phoenix. To avoid that metropolitan CF, catch Hwy 85 south at Gila Bend to I-8 East and pick up I-10 again at Casa Grande into Tucson. From there, I-19 will get you to Nogales. It's not as complicated as it sounds, angling south and east as you go. Well maintained two-lane Hwys pass through scenic farm towns, the Mojave Desert and along the Colorado River.

If you don't mind the endless tedium of straight-shot I-5 through the Valley, pick up I-210 south of Santa Clarita CA, catch I-10 at San Bernardino east to Hwy 85 and follow the directions listed above from there.

You have lots of options: have a good trip.
